FPMS Guest Families

Our shelter program serves Mat-Su families with children under the age of 18, expectant Moms, single Moms and single Dad's with children under 18.  Over 50% of our guests are under the age of 5 years old. Homelessness overtakes families for a myriad of reasons:

Family dissolution
Loss of home through disaster
Medical Issues causing job loss
Lack of job opportunities (with a living wage)
Lack of affordable housing

All children need a home!

In the Family Promise model, area churches offer overnight shelter and hospitality
while homeless families participate in rigorous case management and family strategic planning.
Children attend their school of origin, or attend day care while their parents are working
to achieve their goals. These include gaining employment, life skills and budgeting help, medical and public assistance benefits, attaining transportation, using thrift store vouchers for personal items,
saving their food stamps and 80% of their income for future housing.
In an average of 40 days families move into their own homes and are self sufficient!!

The positive mentoring and hospitality of congregation members and volunteers mean the world to our families and many long-term relationships are formed!

Family Promise is also among seven Valley Agencies which distribute the BHAP Grant
(Basic Homeless Assistance Program funding from HUD/AHFC).  These funds can assist in preventing homelessness by paying a portion of rent to landlords for folks with an eviction notice,
or to utility companies for folks with utility shut-offs.
Also, this BHAP funding is used to place the homeless into housingonce clients are financially sustainable.
